How God Finances His Work
God Owns & Controls Everything
A creator retains ownership of his work even when it is used by others.
The foundational convictions for understanding how God finances His work is the simple affirmation, “God owns and controls everything.”
God’s ownership is established by creation. From Genesis 1:1 (“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”) through Revelation 4:11 (“Our Lord and God, You are worthy to receive glory and honor and power, because You have created all things …”), God’s creative ownership is affirmed.
A creator retains ownership of his work even when it is used by others. For example, an author copyrights the contents of a book. While you may purchase the book, the author always owns the creative content. If you use it as your own, you are guilty of plagiarism – stealing someone’s intellectual property. The cosmos is like this. God created if. We use it. But He holds the copyright! The universe belongs to Him.
God’s ownership is re-affirmed, for believers, by redemption. Through Jesus, “we have redemption” (Eph. 1:7) meaning “you are not your own, for you were bought at a price” (1 Cor. 6:19b-20a). In a sense, as a believer you are doubly owned. God created you and has redeemed you. He owns you by creation and redemption.
God also controls everything. David affirmed this in his confessional prayer during the offertory service for the construction of the Temple. He prayed, “Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on the earth belongs to You. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom and You are exalted as head over all.” (1 Chron. 29:11)>
So the tough question is, Since God owns and controls everything, why do Christians and Christian ministries have financial needs?
